Paris, France, 1988
American model Debbie Chin was based in Paris when I met her in 1988. I was working for National Geographic magazine of an essay about the Paris fashion world for an all-France issue planed for July, 1989 to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the French revolution. I had always wanted to do something on fashion and asked to have that as my assignment. This is a portrait I made of Debbie in the apartment she shared with one or two other models. It’s a very none directed portrait which is the way I prefer to work. There seems to be a bit of tension in her face and the position of her hands. The flowers in the vase of water dominate the left hand side of the composition but if you split the picture down the middle you’d probably have two verticals that could hold their own as single images. Two for one is often a discovery after the fact.
