Rafael (Rafi) Santos and Savannah Butala, were the crowned seniors at Hazleton High’s homecoming. Savannah’s family has lived in Hazleton for generations. She is going to college to study forensic science and cultural studies. Rafi came from the Dominican Republic when he was 11 and is hoping to get a college baseball scholarship. He ran for homecoming court he says, “to show that I can achieve whatever I want no matter the color of your skin.” During a discussion about race and potlitics in his English class Rafi says, “I stand everyday for the Pledge of Allegiance because that’s giving respect for this country that allowed me and my friends and family to come over here, settle, get jobs. I have a job, go to school for free, and get an education.”
