A collaboration with @amivitale. Wild elephants make their way through the shrubby landscape of the #namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. The conservancy surrounds the Mathews Range and serves as a critical wildlife refuge for many species and particularly important for #elephant as they move seasonally between the Mathews Range and the Mt. Kenya and Ngare Ndare Forest, a route they have been using for decades. According to the most recent census, there are over 7,000 #elephants in the region, an increase of 12% over the past 5 years.
Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy is home to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. The sanctuary provides a safe place for injured elephants to heal and later, be returned back to the wild.
